Over a half or full day, a local guide takes you from Al Khor's harbour and watchtowers to the tidal channels of the mangroves, where herons stay year-round and flamingos arrive in the cooler months. The full day adds the drive further north to Zubara Fort, the best-preserved old pearling town in the Gulf. Al Zubarah is Qatar's first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site, an old pearling town preserved almost intact, while the Al Thakira mangroves are a protected reserve alive with birdlife on the edge of the desert. A licensed local guide ties both together, telling you what you are actually looking at rather than just dropping you at a viewpoint.
The North Qatar tour runs year-round, but the most comfortable months are roughly October through April, when walking around Al Khor, the mangroves, and Zubara Fort is pleasant rather than hot. These cooler months are also when the north is at its best, because flamingos and migratory birds arrive at the Al Thakira mangroves, so a winter or spring trip usually means the best birdwatching. Sunrise and sunset are the calmest, most photogenic hours at the mangroves, and if you are on a layover, the tour runs at whatever time suits your flight.
